I'm big into JC. No, not Jesus Christ, Jack Custard (or Jaques Cousteau as he's oft mistakenly labelled). He's actually a really fascinating fellow, as are pretty much all true pioneers, but he's also carrying bin-loads of style. That top button? Snapped shut! Rolled-up-beany-the-same-as-what-I-got? Check! You don't have to be Mark Kermode to see where Wes Anderson got the inspiration for Steve Zissou in 'A Life Aquatic'.
And as if being a smooth operator wasn't enough, Wikipedia has him down as: (1) a naval officer, (2) explorer, (3) ecologist, (4) filmmaker, (5) innovator, (6) scientist, (7) photographer, (8) author and (9) researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. (10) He co-developed the aqua-lung, (11) pioneered marine conservation and (12) was a member of the Académie Française. (13) He was commonly known as "Captain Cousteau". Now, I don't know about you, but if I ever get to have 'Captain' preceding my name, that's when I'll know I've made it!
So, I'll be reading more about our man here. Watch this space.
