Tynemouth Surf Film Festival

Trust me on this one – you really don't need a reason to visit Tynemouth (apart from a promising chart). It's got surf, and occasionally it's very good, not only that, it's actually a really cool place, I was amazed how nice it was the first time I went, feels really well-heeled which I wasn't expecting, with coffee shops and bars etc, but before I get too 'estate agent', ANOTHER very good reason to be in Tynemouth on the 16/17th October is the Tynemouth Surf Film Festival. There really isn't enough of this kind of thing in our community, at least not this side of the M5, so do your thing, support the organisers and go see. There's more info here, here and here. Enjoy!

Click to go big ('cause I can't get it any bigger than this)!

  1. really? tynemouth is not so nice. holier than yow surf attitude. some great lads there but alot of idiots. Geordies have a rep for being friendly. and yokshire folk have a rep for being miserable...but there is a much better surf vibe in scarborough and whitby than tynemouth. ive lived in both areas for number of years...

and the film fest does not have any local flicks...which makes it shit.......where's oly's invite??

  2. You're entitled to your opinion Danny, as am I.

And whilst I object to your choice of words and most of what you say, I regret to admit that you may have a point about the lack of local films.

But whilst I do feel it's important to support and promote local talent, when in a genre such as this, local film-makers are few and far between, I think that to refer to the event as 'shit' when you are (I assume) not the owner of the facts, would be, in my opinion, more than a little unfair.

I'm sure that the organisers (who I'm certain are the types to welcome polite suggestions for next time) are busting their gut to put on a good show. The selection of films on offer has breadth, and they're doing their bit by showing films like 'Women And The Waves' which exposes female surfers' efforts in our male-dominated arena.

Love or hate Geordie surfers Danny, I really hope you change your mind and decide to support the festival.

With regard to the lack of local films, there just is not enough people making surf films around the North East. We showed 'Rise' last year and we will be showing the latest SAS short film at this years event. We have tried to cover all bases with the film festival and this includes having a couple of UK films on.

The TSFF is still very much in its infancy so we will take any feedback and work toward next year.

It is not the first time that I have heard mention the critique that geordie surfers have an unsavoury manner in and sometimes out of the water. All I can say is that there are these characters in every town across the globe and I bid people who have had an unpleasant experience here to not tar all of us with that one brush.

One thing that I think should be taken into account (and this is in no way condoning poor behaviour) is how over populated the Tynemouth beaches are. This is mainly due to the increased popularity of our sport and the fact that we are so close to thousands of students who reside in the North East and use our local surf schools and hire centres to frequent the surf. I, in no way wish this statement to come off wholly negative as the increased popularity of the sport in our area means we can push surf driven tourism in our little town. NB. For the guys who work hard 9-5 all week, have surfed for donkeys and have their few hours on the weekend to ride waves, frustration must incur on a regular as their once baron line ups now resemble Fistral.

We are trying to push things in the North East as are many others. We don't wish to recieve any blue peter badges (just yet) but urge people merely to keep an open mind about projects that we have worked very hard to fund and organise.

    Regards

    PT

  4. think you both are reading something between the lines that is not there.

i said there are some great lads in tynemouth (and i am basically talking about the real long time locals)...but there are other extended members of the "crowd" that give everyone a bad name

just look at what happened at the gare last winter with the gannet episode and those young lads from tyenmouth/whitley bay

and my second point was that there is abetter vibe around scarbs than at tynemouth..much more fun orientated. which i dont think you can disagree with

ok i was a bit off with saying the initiive is shit..sorry about that..there are some good vids..but it is really dissapointing not to get Oly Banks stuff, the lad who did Rise (cant memb his name at this moment..begins with L i think) ...the lad in saltburn who does golden brown...cant memb his name either...some of the yorkshire and south sheilds bodyboarders (who have some insane footage).. and even SW produced stuff with our waves like that fusion vid..and some irish stuff.

the last thing i want to see is those brotehrs grim condescending hypocritical marketing whores/victims machado and fookin rasta preaching there bollocks...jezus. great surfers but who do they thnk we are?

no hard feellign good luck with it i might pop round unless that low forecasted nw of scotland produces the goods
