Chasing mountains ( ...and dodging hurricanes )

Click pics to go big (recommended)

We had some pretty hefty bumps come knocking over the weekend. I say 'knocking'—it was actually more of a full-on 'assault'. The swell arrived as predicted, but it was all heffed-up and backed by a bastard NNW'erly, which made things rather 'interesting'. Occasional set waves on the Saturday were in the 10ft+ range, and it was forecast to get even bigger the following day, but it turned out that the swell peaked earlier than predicted and whilst Sunday was smaller (still double over-head+) it eventually sorted itself out after a drop in the wind late in the afternoon. Even the sun had the decency to show it's face, which is a good thing because up until that point it had been feeling more like November than July.

Conditions being as they were, I decided to do a bit of searching, as did most, and as big as the usual spots were, I saw even bigger, ride-able waves up/down the coast. With no takers on the scene it was difficult to accurately estimate the size but it's safe to say that they were over 20ft on the face, perhaps considerably. Serious stuff.

Make sure you take a real close look at the shots (click to go big), especially the third shot down. That's Tom making challenging conditions look effortless on his back-hand. The two-shot sequence below that is of ex-pat South African, Gary, on his 6'0"(wtf!?!) Phil Clifford/Rocket getting ready to break the sound barrier, only to be greeted with a sizeable, and totally un-make-it-roundable section.

The Barn Owl
A sad sight. It'd been hit and killed by a car, I couldn't just leave it to be mashed to a pulp by other cars, so I moved it to the side of the road.
